Waste percentages on a Digital press are based off of the total number of press sheets. On an Offset press, it is based off of press sheets per pass.

  • Press Sheets Up To - Used to set breaks
  • Flat Overs - A flat number of overs
  • Percent - Overs based on the quantity of sheets

When calculating waste, the scale does not slide. The Waste calculation is the percentage of Total Number of Press Sheets plus a Flat Number of Sheets.

  • Exact matches use the listed percentage and flat sheets
  • If the Quantity exceeds the maximum Quantity in the scale, the maximum Quantity is used.
  • If the Quantity is below the minimum Quantity, the minimum Quantity is used.
  • If the Quantity is between scales, the next highest scale is used.
  • Example:

Press Sheets Up ToFlat OversPercentage Overs
    500110.00
    999999402.00

If the number of Press Sheets = 350, the calculation would find the first Waste Scale and the calculation for overs would be:

Percentage Overs + Flat Overs = Total Overs

    35 (10% of 350 Press Sheets) + 1 (Flat Overs) = 36

If the number of Press Sheets = 1000, the calculation would find the second scale because the number of Press Sheet has exceeded the Press Sheets up to the first scale.

Percentage Overs + Flat Overs = Total Overs

20 (2% of 1000 Press Sheets) + 40 (Flat Overs) = 60

Offset presses allow you to choose Calculate Per Head (Yes/No).

To better understand how this toggle choice will affect an offset press run, here are two examples.

Calculate per Head - Off

10,000 4up 8.5x11 Flyers - 2500 Press Sheets

Flat Waste - 50 = 50 sheets

Percentage - 10 = 250 sheets

Total amount of Press Sheets for job - 2800

10,000 4up 16 page booklets - 20,000 Sheets

Flat Waste - 50 = 50 sheets

Percentage - 10 = 2000 sheets

Total amount of Press Sheets for job - 22,050

Calculate per Head - On

10,000 4up 8.5x11 Flyers - 2500 Press Sheets

Flat Waste - 50 = 4 x 50 = 200 sheets

Percentage - 10 = 250 x 4 heads = 1000 sheets

Total amount of Press Sheets for job - 1200

10,000 4up 16 page booklets - 20,000 Sheets

Flat Waste - 50 = 800 sheets

Percentage - 10 = 2000 x 16 heads = 32,000

Total amount of Press Sheets for job - 52,800
